At this exact moment, both my e-mail and my Google reader are at zero. It’s a miracle. The reader was bad, I had some of my favorite blogs that I hadn’t peeked at since Memorial Day. I have to admit, every blog I can, I subscribe via e-mail.

It’s just easier with the iPhone. Bing. New e-mail. Mid-day inspiration while my children are fighting over light sabers in the backyard. What’s not to love?

Since I cleared my reader, I found a few projects I love that you might as well, so I’m dumping them here. Seriously, it’s my blog, I can do post what I like, even if it’s just for my own convenience.

First up, for those who love embroidery or want to learn. I firmly believe anyone can pick up this skill and should. Lots of tutorials online, lots of free patterns, lots of uses for this skill. On to the find…

There are three images in the FREE set, but the macaroni and cheese is my favorite. Click over to see ‘frosting on my cupcake’ and ‘cookie to my milk’. Who doesn’t love embroidered food with faces?

I love that it’s the same pattern for all 3 fruit, and they give you the exact colors used on each. The photos are beautiful and easy to follow, especially the demonstration of how to create the seeds.

Make sure if you plan on making these you read the instructions carefully. To be practical and actually protect you from heat, the yarn is doubled and the pattern uses a size K crochet hook.

Friday Find: Good Friday Edition

Hello everyone. In celebration of Good Friday, I thought I’d share a quick little knit project. I completed this project 2 years ago as part of a knit along group. I still use this dishcloth frequently, it has held up nicely.

The pattern is called The Empty Tomb and you can find it at Made By Lindy. Can you believe she designed this pattern when she was only 16 years old?! You can see what other colors and yarns have been used on this project at Ravelry. She has several other nice spring cloth patterns if you are interested in a non-Christian themed pattern. The Bloom and Daisy patterns would be great for this time of year.

It knits up quickly and if you cast on today, I’m sure you can have it finished by Sunday. It’s a perfect hostess gift if you are celebrating in someone else’s home. A great reminder for the real reason for all those marshmallow chicks and chocolate eggs. Have a fantastic weekend!

March Craft Challenge

Yes, I played along in Christy Nelson’s monthly craft challenge yet again this month. It definitely helped that I won this month’s kit free as a prize. Despite the challenging family life moments this past month, I managed to sit down for a few hours last Sunday and get my project completed.

The inspiration for this piece was a vintage mirrored music box my Granny had in her home. The music box played the theme to Love Story. Can’t say I’ve ever seen the movie, but it’s one of those identifiable pieces of music. This music box had a magnetic butterfly and somehow in the internal workings there was another magnet that moved around, giving the effect of the butterfly dancing about. It was a truly captivating piece as a child.

Last month, while on a trip to visit family, my sister and I were in a thrift store. They had one of the music boxes for sale. It was missing the butterfly, and my sister almost didn’t recognize it. I have no idea why I didn’t buy it at the time, I really should have! Especially now, as I found a way to recreate the butterfly. The original butterfly on the music box was a dainty plastic thing, but by using 2 pieces of the same paper, it gives nearly the same mirrored effect.

The elements provided by Christy’s challenge were:

brown ribbon
small wooden clothespins
decorative paper bag
metal tin
foam tape

Supplies I purchased to create mirror:

dollar store mirror
wooden spools
round magnets
acrylic craft paint
scrapbooking paper (Recollections “Glorious Garden” line from Michael’s)

Here are the supplies from my crafting stash. They missed the photo because I added many as I was working through the process:

Mod Podge
craft knife (X-acto style)
foam brush (for Mod Podge & paint)
hot glue gun & glue
Kindergarten scissors
brayer
glass cleaner
paper towels
rotary cutter, guide & mat
foil tape (Oriental Trading Company)

I started the process by painting my wooden spool in a matching green color. Between coats, I disassembled the dollar store mirror. I had to use the craft knife to cut through some of the glue, but it wasn’t too difficult. I tested the magnets, one on each side of the mirror, to see how easily they moved. I decided to remove the thick corrugated cardboard on the back to make the magnets move more smoothly. The choice is yours. Ultimately I chose to wrap the edges of my mirror in the foil tape rather than glue the frame back on and have gaps. If you plan to share the project with a young child, I’d consider using both the cardboard and frame for added safety. If you choose not to use the cardboard, you can gently remove the hangers from the back and glue them to the piece at the end of the project or save them for another project. My hangers were slipped through a slit in the cardboard and held on by tape.

I continued to add coats of paint to my wooden spool. Next, I opened the decorative paper bag to use it as a pretty backing for my mirror. The bag opened pretty easily along the seams.

I used a foam brush to apply Mod Podge to both the paper and the back of the mirror. I used my brayer to make sure there were no bubbles or creases as I applied the paper to the mirror.

While the Mod Podge and paint dried, I cut out my butterflies and flowers from the scrapbook papers. I found that the Kindergarten style short scissors were most effective for cutting around the round edges and small spaces. I made sure to cut two of each butterfly, a top and a bottom. This required two identical sheets of scrapbook paper, but the effect is well worth it!

I chose to cut a round magnet down to the size of my wooden clothespins. I used the craft knife to score the magnets until I was able to snap it into the pieces I needed. While using my cutting mat, I took some of the remaining paper bag and cut a strip 1/2 inch wide to cover the bottom of the metal tin. The rotary cutter and guide made this amazingly easy.

Next was round two of Mod Podge. Using the same technique as before, I applied the cut out flower to the front of the mirror. I applied a layer of Mod Podge over the top of the paper as well. It was a trick to clean the Mod Podge off the glass between the flowers and petals, but I wanted everything to be neat. I also used the MP to attach the strip of paper bag around the bottom portion of the metal tin. I added a coat of MP to the outside of my painted wooden spool to give it a finished look. I also took a few minutes to use the foam tape to stick the sets of butterflies to each other, print sides facing out, to create a dimensional look.

While things dried, I moved on to hot glue. I used the hot glue to attach a magnet strip to the bottom of each clothespin and the dimensional butterflies to the top of each clothespin. When the MP was dry, I used hot glue to attach a magnet to the top of the wooden spool. I also used hot glue to attach the brown ribbon to the edge of the metal tin lid as well as a magnet to the bottom of the tin.

Once the front of the mirror was dry, I used the foil tape to trim the edge of the mirror. It gave it a finished look and covered the rough edges of the dollar store mirror.

Once finished, use the extra plain magnets on the back of the mirror to hold the tin and butterflies in place. This makes a cute note holder.

Or if you wish to ‘play’ with it, use the magnet attached to the wooden spool to make your butterfly dance around the garden.

If I were to do it again, I’d probably shop around a bit more for some flower or garden stickers to make it easier to decorate the front of the mirror. This would take out the Mod Podge and MP removal step and make the whole process a little easier. I would probably also purchase another cheap photo frame in the same size as the mirror, looking for a frame style that would be easier to glue and fit more tightly once the cardboard backing was removed from the mirror. Those are just my tips and thoughts, but I’m still very pleased with this project. For a cheap, dollar store, style project this works pretty well. If budget were no issue, I would research magnetic paint options so there would be no need for magnets on the reverse side. This would make it much easier to use as a note board, but would likely double the cost of the project (or more).

Not So Funny Valentine

This year, I chose my own valentine. I chose this beautiful print from artist Jennifer Katherine. I stumbled across her blog more than a year ago and began following her. I loved her style, I loved her use of digital, graphic tools and yet, she made things with buttons. Then, after following her a few months, I saw her delve into sewing. This was a girl after my own heart. Although I’ve put my digital art days behind me (for now), I have a great appreciation for the blend of technical with traditional arts and crafts.

I recall when Jennifer put the early sketches of this piece on her blog, and then a while later when she showed a glimpse of it with color. I was in love. It was one of those moments where art spoke directly to my heart. I went months without catching up on my blog reader, and wouldn’t you know, the evening I finally caught up, Jennifer had posted just days before that she opened an Etsy shop. And guess what was for sale?! The surprising thing was that she had a note on her shop about a portion of proceeds going to one of my favorite charities. I just HAD to have it. I sent Mr. T the e-mail with the link to purchase. Then I became impatient and just asked him one night if I could buy it, since I have an Etsy account and he doesn’t. A few clicks for me, a journey through a snowstorm for Jennifer and a few days later, it was in my hands!

One of the best parts of the piece for me is what’s happened behind the scenes. I shared through the Etsy convo feature why I was so excited to purchase it, she shared some of her heart and personal story of why she made the piece. It’s truly amazing how the whole thing is stitched together. I almost didn’t share with you on here on my blog, because it’s so unconventional to have a broken heart as a valentine’s gift. But, it’s the truth, my heart is being mended, our marriage is being mended, life right now is a season of healing and restoration. Nothing could better represent this season of life. Even down to the part where it arrived in the midst of my medical testing for those chest pains! Literally and metaphorically, this speaks to me in so many ways. I love passing by it multiple times a day, and am surprised by the variety of emotions and thoughts is produces. This piece of paper speaks to my soul. That is truly the best kind of art!

Three I Like Thursday

One of my favorite parts of blogging and the blogging community is learning about new things and reading how people actually feel about them. So here’s a new (occasional) feature “Three I Like Thursday”. Why like? Well, I could say I love, but I’ve found myself using extreme adjectives far too much and I’m trying to scale back and be real about my feelings so that when I say “love” it has real meaning. I certainly do not put these items on equal status as my family, which I truly do LOVE. Why only three? KNOCK, KNOCK. Hello, read this blog much? Mom of 4, no time for top ten lists here. Three is much more reasonable. Now that the set-up is finished, on to the items.

1. e.l.f. Liquid Eyeliner

I’m not a huge makeup person, but I do wear it when I go out. I like to look my best, especially for the rare date night. I picked this up from an endcap at Target in late November for just $1. I’m not normally an eyeliner person, haven’t used liquid since my college days in my stage makeup class. I knew I was going to be in the show, and just in case I lost it or had to share with a random teenager I didn’t want to spend a lot. I’m a little picky when it comes to eye issues, and as a contact wearer, don’t want to risk any germs. For a buck, I could always toss it and replace it if necessary. The surprise was, I really liked it. And I’ve continued to wear it on days I wear full makeup. It’s a quick lift and definitely something everyone should try if they haven’t already. The price is great too! They only had black at my Target store, but on the e.l.f. website there are lots of other colors to choose from. Don’t believe me? Sarah over at Real Life Blog also used this item for a stage performance and shares my sentiments about it.

2. e.l.f. Regular and Waterproof Mascara Duo

Same Target trip, same reasoning. I picked up this little duo for the show as well. I know some beauty experts may disagree, but because I’m so cautious about my eyes I buy the cheapest mascara I can find and replace it every 4-6 weeks. I like that this duo has both because there are certain *ahem* weeks that I need waterproof, but I don’t like how difficult it can be to remove. Other days regular mascara will do just fine. This affords me the choice without having to dig around the drawer to find the right one or try to remember which formula I bought when and which needs replacing. Again, I only found black in store, but brown is available online.

3. Black & Decker Burr Mill Coffee Grinder

I’m a French press girl. A few years ago when I wanted to switch from my Tassimo system (great convenience) to French press (better taste), I did a lot of research. I read that buying whole beans and grinding them with a burr grinders was the way to go, but most grinders were too expensive in my opinion for a trial. I found a Black & Decker model for less than $30 and eventually gave away my Tassimo. Because my model is older, it is no longer available, but I’m so glad B&D has continued to provide an affordable burr grinder. The one pictured is the newer model, but based on what I’ve read it’s the same, just with a sleeker, more modern stainless look than mine. Yes, it’s loud. My overly dramatic kids like to cringe whenever I start it, but that is the way of the burr grinder. Yes, it requires maintenance. I clean it every time I refill the hopper & the cleaning takes a time investment of about 10 minutes if you do it well. I’m so pleased with the taste difference, and that it won’t heat up my beans like an electric grinder that chops the beans, so it’s well worth the noise and effort. If you are considering grinding your own beans at home to French press, this is a great starter model. Some day when I wear this one out, I’m going to ask for a fancy burr grinder, but this one has lasted me nearly 2 years and doesn’t show any signs of stopping.

Team Conan

I know there are a lot of things going on in the world right now and this is by far the least of them, but it’s nice to have a distraction sometimes. At least until those with the skills can get in, determine what help is needed and coordinate how best to implement that assistance. For now, I am praying, and waiting for word from some of my favorite charities- Service International, Hand of Hope, and Convoy of Hope – on how best to help.

Now, back to the post at hand:

Let me just say it. I LOVE Conan O’Brien. Sure, I’m married to a witty red-head, mother to two twin red-heads well on their way to careers in comedy, so I’m clearly biased. I have fond memories of watching Conan off and on in my college years. I really began watching him regularly during late night nursing sessions with my first son, nearly 7 years old now. That’s when my love of O’Brien truly began. I was thrilled years ago when the date was announced when he would take over The Tonight Show. I patiently waited until the debut last June. I can’t tell you how many nights I stay up much later than I should to watch every minute of his show. So the recent stir has me in a tizzy. I truly don’t understand why there is such a disconnect between executives in corporate America and basic rules of decency and conduct. A contract is a contract, your word is your word. If you prove yourself unworthy of trust, what else is left? Anyway…

DIY Team Conan Tee

What is better than internet frenzy + crafting? NOTHING, I tell you. I was thrilled to see this come across my Twitter feed, from one of my favorite crafters & red-heads herself, Vickie Howell. Her DIY “Team Conan” T-Shirt has so many possibilities! T-shirts aren’t a staple of my crafting arsenal and don’t own any of those fabric paint markers, but I’ve been plotting the various items you could embroider with the “Team Conan” logo. Think of it as if it was our generation’s version of collectible election memorabilia. A button, a set of cloth napkins, even baby Onesies! Heck, if you love Mod Podge, the possibilities are endless!

I think this will be my craft of choice for the weekend, I just haven’t quite decided what medium I will work in yet. Mr. T has even requested a t-shirt, which would require a trip to a craft store. That’s almost like him ASKING me to spend money on crafts!

Receiving Handmade Gifts

Hope you don’t mind the micro-blogging. It’s always hard this time of year for crafters to blog because so many of our projects are gifts. We don’t want to blow the surprise before the gift is given.

Today I’m sharing with you my oldest son, who carries the crafty gene. Don’t you just love the look on this sweet face? He loves making and giving handmade!

He made this at school. It’s a carpet sample painted with what I suspect is just average acrylic paints. He was so proud of his gift & of keeping it secret until he brought it home. Merry Christmas to you all! Safe travels for all of you hitting the road (or air) as we are later today!

Need Baby Gifts?

I do! Someone in my family is expecting a precious package in 2010, so I was thrilled when I got the announcement about Resa Design’s 12 days of Christmas sale. The only bummer for me is that the gender of this little one has yet to be discovered. I guess that’s good for Mr. T though, or at least his pocketbook. Another mom business I was introduced to during the show was My Doodle Bop. Kristin has created several different styles of signs to hang on your infant’s carrier to help friends and strangers think twice before touching your precious cargo. The signs sport the phrase “My hands are clean, Are yours?” The signs are only $9.95 with free shipping & during the month of December, 10% of all sales benefit Operation Shower. Kristin gave out some of her signs as prizes for those chatting during the MomTV broadcast & I won one. I am so impressed with the design, a bit larger than I expected, they are sure to grab everyone’s attention. They are very sturdy, I suspect they would last through many babies, so they’d be a great gift for a first time mom.

Don’t Just Smell the Roses, Buy Them!

I’ve been thinking about how to be more content lately. Often we have expectations that aren’t met, and then we are discontent, unhappy or even bitter because of it. So, I’ve been considering how to get over this issue. As I told the cashier this morning, “Sometimes, I girl just has to buy herself flowers.”

While grocery shopping, I rounded the corner saw the beautiful display in the floral department of cash & carry flowers. Among all the fall hues were the most interesting pink spray roses. Nearly white near the stem, they graduated to almost magenta at the tips of the petals. Princess Peach was with me of course, and pink is her favorite color. I nearly walked by, but thought about how much I would enjoy seeing them every time I passed by the dining room for days to come. So I bought them, just because. They were so remarkable the cashier and bagger even commented on them. They were a bit surprised, then nodded to affirm my revelation.

Years ago, I would have dropped hints to Mr. T about how lovely they were or what flowers were on sale. I’m not sure why we women do this so often. Maybe it’s part of that fairy tale, princess rescued by a princess thing marketed to my generation by Disney since we were children. Truth is, the only one responsible for our attitude, good or bad, is ourself. I drill this into my children, but then sometimes catch myself reasoning away a bad mood with a tale of how someone mistreated me, how things haven’t gone as planned, or how I’m justified in being cranky because of X, Y or Z.

While my husband was away on business recently I cleaned my house from top to bottom. After spending far too long sulking about how I’m the only one that cleans, I changed my attitude. If I’m the only one who cleans, then I’m going to clean on my timetable, in the manner I want, so that when finished, I’m pleased. Of course, most of the rooms didn’t stay to my satisfaction more than an hour, but I did it. Most importantly, I was happy I did it, and I enjoyed the rewards not only of my hard work, but my improved attitude.
